A Platform for Open Source Innovation — Built with Drupal, Designed for the Open Web
The Innovation Hub is a community-powered tool to surface, support, and fund innovative ideas across open source ecosystems.
What We’re Building
The Innovation Hub module is a Drupal-based tool for:
- Submitting and reviewing project proposals
- Rallying community support around new ideas
- Coordinating contributor engagement
- Funding and tracking projects via Open Collective
While the module is built in Drupal, its structure and workflows are designed to support innovation across any open source community — from governance bodies to cross-project alliances. Originally envisioned for drupal.org, the module is designed for any Drupal site — and adaptable to open source ecosystems ready to innovate in public.
Use Cases: From Drupal Pilots to Ecosystem-Wide Applications
1. A reusable innovation module for Drupal-based communities
Perfect for:
- Open source projects and ecosystems
- Independent collectives looking to coordinate R&D
- Incubators, alliances, or funders supporting innovation across ecosystems
We’re piloting the module on drupalcontribution.org, a community-led site that will help test, refine, and demonstrate it in action.
2. A potential feature for drupal.org
Inspired by the Pitch-burgh innovation contest, the Innovation Hub was initially envisioned as a native space on drupal.org to propose and fund community innovation. While currently out of scope for the Drupal Association, building it independently may open the door to future integration.
Why It Matters
This initiative addresses real pain points:
- Innovation often happens in silos or gets lost in issue queues
- Contributors rarely have time or resources to experiment
- There’s no shared space to propose, promote, and fund non-core ideas
- Governance discussions often lack prototypes or working models
This project offers a real, working solution — starting with Drupal and scalable across the open web.
